How to verify and release a new model version
Separate training, file checks, evaluation and release to control which versions reach inference.
Completed training does not mean a model is ready for use
A process can finish while file transfer is still incomplete. The catalogue can point to a directory that changed. Another execution can take over the job before its result is confirmed.
Release needs a separate step. It must link the file set, configuration, data source and authorised execution. This lets the team investigate a version without relying on a worker's working directory.
Check the manifest before registering the version
In one implementation, promotion checks the existence, size, identification and SHA-256 digest of final files. SHA-256 is a digest used to check that content matches the manifest. The version is registered with the current execution and storage reservation in the same transaction.
If verification fails, the output remains available for another check. The team does not need to repeat all training because a transfer or manifest check failed. The error must identify the stage and preserve the previous state.
File integrity and model quality are separate decisions
An intact file can still contain a model unsuitable for the product. Evaluation must use data separate from training and quality criteria defined by the company. Deployment must also measure memory, loading time and behaviour under the expected workload.
Keep the previous version identified and available during the change. Recovery depends on application and data compatibility as well as the model file. Do not treat a model change as isolated when the response contract also changes.
Build the path from research to operations
Consulting can implement version records, file checks, release criteria and a recovery procedure. The team should be able to identify what it serves, where it came from and how to replace that version with verifiable criteria.
