Migrate and retire a stack while keeping operational control
Verify the destination, preserve data and assign a single owner to each resource before retiring old infrastructure.
Reducing stacks requires an inventory of what they support
A migration can aim for fewer services, lower cost and simpler maintenance. The old stack can hold scheduled tasks, local files, integrations and access rules absent from the main page. Retirement starts with an inventory of these contracts.
Define the destination of each data item and flow. Also check sessions, open connections and consuming services. A new address responding does not prove background tasks or old clients still work.
Avoid two states controlling the same resource
In an infrastructure-as-code migration, I worked with the risk of two states controlling the same DNS record. DNS is the system that relates names to network destinations. Retirement in the old state can affect a record already pointing to the new service.
The plan must show a single owner for the resource. A configuration used only in one command can also disappear in the next run. Persist the decision and check plans on both sides before retiring the old system.
Switch traffic after checking flows
Use a preview that permits checking the destination before the switch. Prepare copies, a recovery procedure and a window suited to the product. Validate writes, reads, integrations and periodic tasks. After the switch, observe the same indicators and keep recovery possible for the defined period.
Retirement must name specific resources. Separate reproducible files from data unique to the destination. Do not use broad deletion to sync code with a directory that holds uploads, configurations or secrets.
Scope migration as a complete flow
Consulting can inventory dependencies, prepare the destination, coordinate the switch and retire known resources. The proposal defines acceptance, the change window, copies and recovery. Savings can be calculated only after identifying what the new operation still needs to retain.
