Hybrid AI infrastructure: where to place data and processing

Distribute processing without making every operation a network crossing. Database location, GPUs and access limits guide the design.

Separating services can increase each task's cost

A company may need to combine a central database, remote GPUs and services in several environments. Distributing these components allows different capacities. But a task that makes many small queries can spend more time on the network than on processing.

Draw the data path and count required network trips. Placement must follow query frequency, transfer volume, permitted access and response time. A private connection does not remove distance or transfer cost.

Place frequent database work near the database

In distributed architecture I work on, the database holds central data while other nodes execute workloads. Tasks with frequent queries can use a node near the database. Publication receives the prepared projection and required difference rather than a full copy to decide what changed.

An inference task can have different placement needs. The model needs capacity and access to authorised input. Assess how much data must leave and where the result will be confirmed. Do not replicate the whole collection for a worker's convenience.

Check the path inside the execution environment

A connection that works on the host can fail in the container. Return routing, name resolution and packet size can change behaviour. Verification must start from the actual process and use representative operations as well as a simple connectivity response.

Also define behaviour when a node disappears. The queue must preserve pending work, and access must remain limited by role. Another node's capacity must be checked before promising it can take over the workload.

Choose distribution from measured paths

Consulting can map data, dependencies and latency, compare options and implement distributed processing. The scope defines access, capacity, transfer limits and recovery. Decisions use the product's actual path and budget.
